Monday 8th February - walk ***** - Around Felixstowe – cold, breezy with light snow.

The Beast from the East two continues today, in fact it looks like temperatures will be at freezing until the weekend. No more snow overnight with only light flurries during the day but it is still windy with a cold NE gusting to 30 knots. With it being so cold Mag brought in the bird feeders to clean and fill and they were soon covered in our resident many sparrows, blackbirds, starlings, doves, pigeons, dunnocks and robins, then when I was having my breakfast watching the action a sparrow hawk zoomed in and landed on a feeder, then a tree stump, the sparrows etc. were not impressed but they all survived this time! Sadly, I did not have my camera to hand so missed recording it:( Then after a lunch of yummy homemade soup and with only light snow Mag and I decided to go for a walk. We did not fancy walking into a bitter cold head wind so set off towards Felixstowe centre, past Allenby Park to what we call ‘conkerland’ a small carpark on the cliff top towards The Dip where you walk through a couple of rows of snow-covered beach huts to gey a great view of the sea below. The waves looked great more like Cornwall than Suffolk if only it was 15 degrees warmer as it looked fantastic for a windsurf but way too cold to even think of going out. It is a real shame a very experience kitesurfer didn’t think the same yesterday and rather foolhardily went for a solo kite session at Walkerswick yesterday and very sadly lost his life, apparently, he was an instructor who should have known better! Thank goodness the lifeboat didn’t have to launch as it was very rough, windy and cold yesterday too! We slowly take the Icey steps down to the prom, then along a short section of beach before reaching the other prom at Jacobs Ladder where the snow-covered granite looked cool. It was quiet today which is hardly surprising in the cold conditions but we were toasty in our ski clothes:) A lot of the beach has disappeared due to the waves and the prom was very icy as our most of the roads here in Felixstowe so great care had to be taken. We then walked up the garden by the town hall and the fountain was a picture as it was a mass of icicles. Then home for the usual cuppa and rock cake, lets hope the wind drops for tomorrow so the walk will be more pleasant but got some nice pics again. Yesterdays pictures were posted on the ‘Visit Felixstowe’ page along with several others from local photographers and they got many hundreds of like and some lovely comment, it is nice to see something positive said on the internet these days!
